Fact Check

Dear friends,

On June 27, 2013 I was nominated as the Ontario NDP candidate in Ottawa West-Nepean in the forthcoming provincial election. My thanks to Calvin Climie and Ria Heynen for nominating me, and to the Ottawa West-Nepean NDP for accepting me – it is an honour.

I am excited by the opportunity to win this seat for the NDP. I believe this time, with the assets I bring, Andrea Horwath’s leadership, the legacy of mis-management by the Liberal government, we can take this seat en route to forming an NDP government in Ontario!

As you know, I bring a proven track record as a progressive representative at the school board (OBE: 1982-88), at
Alex with Mike Cassidy city and regional councils (1991-97), at the provincial legislature as MPP (1997-99), and at Ottawa City Council (2000-10). During that time I have worked to advance a progressive agenda regarding urban planning (I have always refused developer campaign contributions), the environment, social housing, public transit, child care, and poverty issues. In 2010 I was honoured to be awarded the Francophile Award of the Year by ACFO (Ottawa), and in 2013 I was awarded the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal in recognition of my public service.

Ottawa West-Nepean is a riding I know quite well from living here and raising a family here. Through my work as an Ottawa City Councillor I have dealt with many issues (planning, housing, transit, social services, recreation, and more!) affecting our residential communities – these are communities I know well.

I don’t have to tell you that change is coming to Ontario as the era of the McGuinty-Wynne Liberals draws to an end. I had the pleasure of working in the provincial by-election in Kitchener-Waterloo that saw Catherine Fife elected as our first NDP MPP from this riding. I saw first-hand the positive message the NDP brought to that riding and the desperate tactics used by the McGuinty Liberals – tactics we will likely see here in Ottawa West-Nepean. This is an election we cannot take for granted. What is clear is that we need a government that puts people ahead of politics – an NDP government!

I hope to meet you on the door-step in the weeks ahead and hear your views about how we can build a better Ontario. In the meantime, drop me a line at anytime!

Exciting times!

Yours truly,
