  • and a Heritage Designation Plaque for 181 Britannia Road

As you may know, there is a provincial by-election in Ottawa West-Nepean (which includes Bay Ward) for Thursday March 4. There has been little coverage of this by-election and no public all-candidate meetings have been organized to date (and there are only 2 weeks left to this election!). As a result, following consultations with some of our Bay Ward community groups, I am organizing a public all-candidates meeting for this by-election for our community for 7 pm on Monday March 4 in the auditorium at Woodroffe High School (2410 Georgina Drive). I have attached to this e-newsletter a flyer you may wish to use to publicize this event.

Your elected representative to the Ontario Legislature speaks for us on matters involving health care and hospitals, education (including schools, community colleges and universities), roads and transportation, social services, the environment, law enforcement, and of course income and sales taxes (including the famous HST!). Please encourage your friends and neighbours to exercise their democratic right to elect their representative to Queen's Park on March 4.

West Transitway Extension (Bayshore to Moodie Drive) EA Public Open Houses:

Monday February 22 from 6 to 9 pm at the John Mlacak Centre, 2500 Campeau Dr. in Kanata (presentation at 7 pm)
Wednesday February 24 from 6 to 9 pm at Maki House, 19 Leeming Ave. in Crystal Beach-Lakeview (presentation at 7 pm)

The WTE (Bayshore to Moodie Dr.) Environmental Assessment is moving towards its final stages, having identified a preferred route to extend the Transitway west of Bayshore on the way to Kanata (from among 4 candidate routes). The preferred route runs close to the north side of the Queensway (largely on MTO land) with little impact on the bike path and forested area on the NCC lands south of the Crystal Beach-Lakeview community. These public open houses will look at more details on the preferred route, including station location at Moodie Drive.

Downtown Ottawa Transit Tunnel EA Open House on Tuesday February 23 from 6 to 9 pm, Ottawa City Hall

This open house will provide information on the status of the City's LRT plan and DOTT (Downtown Ottawa Transit Tunnel) project. For more information go to http://www.ottawa.ca/residents/public_consult/transit_tunnel/assessment_oh_1/index_en.html

Ron Kolbus-Lakeside Gardens Winter Carnival - 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday February 28 in Britannia Park - winter activities for the family - all are welcome!

Bay Ward Community Council Meeting Wednesday March 3, 7 pm at the Ron Kolbus-Lakeside Centre:

Our monthly public meeting of Bay Ward community groups to discuss local issues, hear from our Community Police Officer, and City hall issues from Bay Ward Councillor Alex Cullen. A presentation on the City's 2010 proposed Water and Wastewater Rate-Supported Operating & Capital Budgets will be on the agenda (for more information on this go to http://www.ottawa.ca/calendar/ottawa/citycouncil/pec/2010/02-23/11- ACS2010-ICS-ESD-0004 - 2010 Rate-supported budget Final.htm - this will be debated by Planning & Environment Committee on February 23, and by City Council on March 24), plus an account of the attempt to re-open the debate on the City's urban boundaries (urban sprawl, anyone?).

Community Environmental Projects Grant Program (CEPGP):

CEPGP is designed to help the City of Ottawa meet its environmental objectives. City programs include solid-waste diversion, water efficiency, wastewater, the water environment, sustainable development and broader global climate issues. The program provides funding for small-scale, community-based initiatives managed by non-profit organizations interested in the improvement and preservation of our environment. A total of $50,000 is available each year. The deadline for applications is Wednesday, March 31, 2010 - Contact Sami Rehman at Environmental Sustainability, Community Sustainability, City of Ottawa Tel: 613-580-2424, ext. 13364 Fax: 613-580-2459, e-mail sami.rehman@ottawa.ca

Nominate that special volunteer or group for a Civic Appreciation Award

It’s time to nominate that special person, organization or coach for a City of Ottawa Civic Appreciation Award. Help us say thank you to that special volunteer in your community who has touched your life.

Every year, over 225,000 volunteers dedicate their time and expertise to make Ottawa a better place to live. Volunteers have a direct impact on many aspects of our day-to-day life, including health, heritage, education, social services, arts and culture, sports and recreation, protective services, literacy services and the environment.

Let us know about that special person in your community whose volunteer efforts should be recognized.  You can tell us about that special person by completing a nomination form online at ottawa.ca/volunteering or by picking up a brochure at one of the City’s Client Service Centres, branches of the Ottawa Public Library or community centres. The deadline for nominations is Friday, March 26, 2010 at 4 p.m.

Any youth, adult, senior or group who willingly volunteers their time and effort to benefit others in the city of Ottawa is eligible for an award.  Please take a few minutes to nominate that special volunteer who coaches children, helps others or contributes their time and talent to an organization in our community. Take time to stop and say thank you to that volunteer who has touched your life.

Awards will be presented in the following categories:  Citizen of the Year (Youth, Adult and Senior); the Brian Kilrea Award for Excellence in Coaching in Amateur Sport; Arts and Culture; Recreation and Sports; Education; Environment; Health; Heritage; Humanitarianism; Rural/Agriculture; and Community Activism (Youth, Adult, Senior and Group).
